Days 220-222: The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally
Days 220 – 222
August 5 – 7
Sturgis, South Dakota

We made it to Sturgis!  As the Mecca of motorcycle pilgrimages, each of us had dreamed for years of one day coming to the 500,000-strong motorcycle rally.  So when we found out that it was on our route, we booked our tickets in advance.  And here we were.  We camped at the Buffalo Chip, arguably one of the best places to experience the races, stunt shows, artwork, and concerts that the rally has to offer.

Lynzee can make any motorcycle look better.
Hustler!
The Tiger is hiding among a line of Harley Davidson's.
It's like the lone deer in a herd of buffalo, wondering to itself: "I hope they
don't realize that I'm not a buffalo."
Main street in Sturgis was crawling with bikes.
Visiting nearby Mount Rushmore.
Needle's eye rock formation in Custer.
Placid lakes in Custer State Park.
We did the zipline over the race track.  Here was our view from the top.
Don't mind us, just being stinking cute together.

On our last night together, Lynyrd Skynyrd was the staring act.  And when the first chords of Free Bird played, their closing song for the night, the crowd got in an uproar. I grabbed Lynzee’s hand and rushed her to an open space in the crowd, holding her close in a slow dance until the song picked up halfway through.  We started whirling around, locking eyes and holding close between spins.  The song climaxed, and we embraced one another; I knew that I was going to miss this woman.

I dropped her off at the airport the next morning.  We stood in the terminal until she needed to board her flight.  Alone, I started my 1,500 mile journey to Nashville, back to my regular-person life.  My travels were over, and now it was time to move onto the next stage of my life.  I’m just happy to know that Lynzee will be in it.

Best co-pilot I could ask for.

Days 217-219: Riding into Sturgis

Riding into Sturgis
Days 217 – 219
August 2 – 4
Grand Teton to Sturgis

It was bittersweet leaving Grand Teton.  It was our last national park of the trip, and we now had less than a week remaining before we needed to part ways and get back to our regular-people lives.  After Sturgis, Lynzee needed to fly back to Reno to get ready for her last semester in her MBA program, and I needed to dash to Nashville to get ready for my first semester as a graduate student.

We exited Grand Teton from the north, riding into Yellowstone one last time.  Although it was a travel day, we also made it a national park day, stopping often to take in the beauty offered by Wyoming’s northwestern corner.  We rode towards South Dakota, stopping often in Wyoming to admire one of the most beautiful states on the trip.

We rode back into Yellowstone with a group of Harley riders
And stopped at the first waterfall we spotted in Yellowstone.
And stopped at the second waterfall we spotted in Yellowstone.
The gap after the Buffalo Bill Dam near Cody.
I couldn't even get the whole dam in the frame.
We crossed back over to Montana to see the Devil's Canyon.
Taking a break.  At this point in the trip, it feels weird to be off the motorcycle.
